What difference does blush make? |
Blush/blusher (I slip between the two, sorry), is really important as it brings a life-like look to your skin. Blush is often the last thing I apply and it just makes my skin look instantly more natural. The higher coverage your foundation is, the more important blush becomes. One of my pet peeves is people wearing heavy foundation but nothing else, it makes you look a bit like a mannequin.
Out of all of the differences I've shown so far, blush is definitely the most subtle on camera and it was quite difficult to get photos to show the difference adequately. I try not to be too heavy-handed with blush as I normally have statement eyes and/or lips so don't want my blush to detract from them. In this case I did apply more that I usually do so that the camera picked it up.
The blush I used today was MAC's Mineralized Skinfinish in Stereo Rose, a warm peach that I find suits any look as long as it doesn't involve pink. In the first photo I'm wearing medium coverage foundation and no bronzer or contouring products; you can see my skin is just a bit one-dimensional. With blush I can achieve a natural looking flushed look. I usually apply my blush in this C shape, along my cheekbone and up towards my temple, so that it not only adds colour to my cheeks but shape as well.

Below is a photo of the same look but with the flash. Most of the colour of the blush is washed out with only the sheen of it visible. If you know you're going out somewhere where there'll be flash photography then blush is even more important. Layering powder blush over a cream blush should help with the intensity of it, as well as making it last longer. If you're worried about going OTT then maybe try it out before hand and take photos of it with the flash to see how much you'll need to apply for it to show up without looking a bit clowny.

I hope I've succeeded in showing what difference wearing blush can make. I assure you, the difference it makes in person is even more noticeable. Also it's worth mentioning that some people choose to add a lifelike look back to their cheeks using bronzer instead of blush, which is totally fine. I never use bronzer so using either/or does work.

P.S. In the first picture above my eyebrow shape in the 3rd and 4th photo is quite different to the shape in the first 2. I have shaved the tail end of my brows and will have a post coming soon about it.
